 Facts

  • Saint Joseph was the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary and foster father of Jesus Christ. We was a hardworking carpenter who settled with his Holy Family in Nazareth. Saint Joseph was from the line of David which, by becoming Jesus’ foster father, fulfilled the prophecy that the Messiah would be a descendant of King David. Saint Joseph was a righteous, compassionate and caring man who served both God and his Holy Family faithfully.

  • Saint Joseph is the patron saint of the dying (it is assumed that he died in the presence of Mary and Jesus), the Universal Church, families, fathers, expectant mothers (pregnant women), travelers, immigrants, house sellers and buyers, craftsmen, engineers, and working people.

  • Saint Joseph is recognized and celebrated on two different days:

March 19 - Saint Joseph the Husband of Mary

May 1 - Saint Joseph the Worker

  • Saint Joseph is mentioned in all four of the Gospels; Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. He is most widely known for the dreams he had, in which an Angel of the Lord came to him to tell him the truth about Mary’s pregnancy with Jesus, the Son of God, and the warning to flee Bethlehem to escape Herod’s massacre of infants after Jesus’ birth. It is not definitively known when Saint Joseph died, but scripture does tell us that he was still alive during Jesus’ presentation in the temple, but it is assumed that he was no longer living when Jesus started his public ministry.
